Nowhere in Europe is so much care given to a mother and her newborn baby
as in the Netherlands. Maternity care is a unique way of providing care
to a family, in their own surroundings, and their new born baby, by a
professional. The aim is to enable the parents to be able to feel safe
in taking care of their child themselves as the professional leaves
them.
A maternity care period starts following the delivery and usually lasts
8 days. During this period you will receive help and advice given by a
fully qualified maternity nurse. Her main tasks will be:
- physical care of mother and baby
- giving information and instruction to the family
- looking out for any possible complications
- taking care of any other family members.
Besides taking care of mother and baby there is also time for light
household chores: keeping clean the lying-in room and the baby room as
well as the bathroom and toilet facilities. This is a daily routine.
Maternity care is sometimes seen as regular household
help, but household actions are secondary to the main task of the
maternity nurse: caring for the mother and her new born baby.
